And then came the final blow

I really, really hate having to eat my words. I seem to be doing that on a regular basis lately. Just when I think I have my diet under control, I find out that I don’t. 3 or 4 years ago, my doctor “prescribed” a book for me to read: Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, MD. Well, I’ve been reading it for the past 2 or 3 weeks, and am going to have to eat the words, “I can’t go vegetarian, and sure can’t go vegan. Why? Because I am seriously considering going vegan…and raw…like Opal.

I have already been heading that direction anyway, but I read enough about eating meat and its effect on hormone levels (even grass-fed, organic) to first cut way back, with the ultimate intention of cutting all animal completely. And yes, I am still wearing my “I &#9829 BACON” lanyard. The changes I have made so far have created the same response my body did last year when I went starch (and gluten) free, only without the withdrawls. haha! But yeah, cheese is BAD to be so yummy…

Whenever I finish the book, I will (maybe) write up a full review with quotes that were the mind changers for me.

    It’s to bad it wasn’t so expensive or I would too. Heck even meat is expensive too! So I end up eating the cheap unhealthy stuff most of the time.

      Meat is crazy expensive! Of course that is just another reason for me to quit eating it. I’ve definitely got to get off my butt and clear a garden plot…

  3. Oh we all eat our words now and again… It’s happened to me more times than I care to remember. Congrats, I’d suggest taking baby steps.

    It doesn’t have to be too expensive, and if you have room for a garden. if you’re not growing one already — it doesn’t have to be big, you can cut some of those bills down; it’s a healthier option too.

    I’ll have to write more about what I exactly eat. Most times, I think people won’t be interested because it’s so simple. πŸ˜‰ But I was able to self-diagnose and clear up a few of the ailments I had years ago. Gluten was the biggest for me; constipation, occasional rash breakouts, tiredness, and sometimes I’d get bloated.

      I’m pretty much easing into it, but I really don’t have much to adjust. I cut out so many stuff when I cut out the artificial flavors/colors/preservatives that this will be a minor(ish) adjustment. πŸ˜‰

      I have to make myself start small with the garden instead of trying to plant a big huge one like my dad always had. Just some fall greens to start with I think. And where I plan to put the garden is heavy with bermuda grass so it will take some time to clear. I just need a big tiller to bust it up because my little one isn’t cutting it. That means either renting a big one or fixing our big one. lol

      Contipation, rash, tiredness, bloating: these are all gluten issues for me too. In fact, that’s how I know I have been glutened recently because my scalp has flared up again. It first flared up along with constipation right after my mom’s 80th birthday party, so I am sure I got glutened there. I expected the diarrhea to hit about a week after, but it just hit this week, though not as bad as before. I still can’t rule out cross-contamination at home though. Or my cycle because that throws my digestion off kilter too…when it’s a “normal” cycle that is. :-/

    Scrape off the grass, pile the dirt and compost and whatever other soil amendments in a long row and do a “raised bed” garden. Forget the tiller. Why mess with the existing (usually useless) dirt? You can do it with or without sides (I used some landscaping timbers to keep stuff from running away) I put down landscape fabric over the soil, cut holes for the plants, and covered the fabric with mulch. Water, watch, and eat. 😎 Tomatoes, okra, and squash are doing OK. Cucumbers and peppers, not so well this year.

      Stop making sense! πŸ˜‰ Kidding. Actually, I had decided I was going to do a raised bed, but I keep forgetting. A raised bed would be all around better because I can put it where I can’t till anyway like where I had my last container garden. πŸ™‚

    Well, I think it is good to try and go vegetarian and all-out vegan. If nothing else, it really makes you focus on eating real food because it helps you eliminate all the junk and processed foods. Then, of course, there are other benefits to the earth and our fellow creatures as well. I am no longer strictly vegan but I still try to keep my diet heavy on veggies and only use animal products as a condiment. And when I do the animal products they are as organic and grass-fed as I can get ’em. After cancer, I am really concerned about hormones and also plastics like BPA. Anyway, I wish you well with whatever your diet is and don’t forget you have great resources who have already been there, like Opal, etc. πŸ™‚

      It’s a struggle. The hubby fried some fish yesterday, and it smelled so good I just had to have a bite. It was soooooo yummy and I don’t even like catfish. lol
